SMART MATERIALS PLA FILAMENT USES AND APPLICATIONS:
- Prototyping.
- Decorative objects.
- Large-scale parts.
- Architectural models.
PLA (Polylactic Acid) is a biodegradable plastic derived from natural sources (corn or potatoes). Its final texture isn't as smooth or resistant as ABS. However, it's easier to execute 3D printing projects that don't require high impact resistance, as printed parts perform better with angles, appear more vibrant, and don't require a heated bed.
Smart Materials offers a variety of PLA filament colors, as well as different weights and diameters (1.75mm and 2.85mm), making them suitable for almost all commercial printers on the market.
"SMARTFIL PLA is manufactured with premium quality virgin PLA, with no recycled or reclaimed material. It is fully stabilized and has a diameter variability of ±0.03 mm. It does not produce warping. Excellent print resolution."

SMART MATERIALS PLA FILAMENT MAINTENANCE:
We recommend that once your 3D print is finished, if you are not going to use your 3D printer anymore, do not remove the filament from the extruder.
Why not remove the filament from the extruder once the 3D printed part is completed?
A small part of the material always remains in the hotend and nozzle. If we remove the filament after using the printer, turn it off, and don't use it for a while, that material will solidify. When we use the 3D printer again, we will encounter a difficulty: removing that "plug" that has formed. Sometimes, it's easy; simply pushing the new filament after the nozzle has reached the indicated temperature, it comes out, but other times it doesn't.
What can we do to prevent 3D filament clogs?
When you use your 3D printer again after being turned off for a few hours, whether with the same type of material or a different one, you should heat the nozzle to the temperature indicated for the filament currently inside (in this case, for PLA, it would be 210°C). Once the temperature is reached, you should gently push the filament towards the heated bed so that the small plug that may have formed after drying comes out. Once it's out, you can gradually remove it.
After this procedure, once the previous spool has been removed, you can insert the new filament. Previously configure the temperature required for this new filament. Once the necessary temperature is reached, you should push the filament so it comes out towards the heated bed. We do this to remove any previous material that has been extruded. Since PLA offers a wide variety of shades, some of them are highly pigmented. This process is important to ensure you get a part with a homogeneous color without stains from the previously used color.
ATTENTION: If the temperature of the new filament you are going to use is lower than the previous one, you should maintain the higher temperature (i.e., that of the previous filament) to prevent clogging. Maintain this temperature until the new filament is already coming out of the tip and you are sure that no old material remains inside.
This filament pushing procedure must be done carefully and can be performed in one way or another depending on the 3D printer you have.
After a few prints, it's recommended to use the cleaning filament. If you take care of your 3D printer, it will give you satisfactory results.
SMART MATERIALS PLA FILAMENT POST-PROCESSING:
PLA cannot be smoothed with Acetone like ABS. With PLA, you can:
- Sand and then paint with acrylic paint.
- Smooth with resin; we use Poxyglass 3D
- Apply a varnish spray.
