3D PRINTER MAINTENANCE WHEN USING PLA
We recommend that after finishing a 3D print, if you won’t use the printer again soon, do not remove the filament from the extruder.
Why leave filament inside the extruder?
Some material always remains inside the hotend and nozzle. If you remove the filament and shut down the printer, that residue will solidify and create a plug. When restarting the printer, pushing a new filament at the right temperature may remove the plug—sometimes easily, sometimes not.
How to avoid filament jams?
When turning your printer back on, preheat the nozzle to the previous filament’s temperature (for PLA: ~210 °C), then push slightly to purge the residual plug. Only then remove the filament.
Load the new filament and preheat to its specific temperature. Push it to extrude a few centimeters, purging the previous color and avoiding color contamination—especially relevant with heavily pigmented PLA tones.
IMPORTANT: If the new filament requires a lower temperature than the previous one, keep the higher temperature until the new material is extruded completely. Then adjust as needed.
After several prints, it is recommended to use a cleaning filament. Proper care ensures optimal performance from your 3D printer.
