STEP-BY-STEP: HOW TO PRINT ABS FILAMENT

  1. Ensure your printer is enclosed or thermally shielded (e.g., acrylic panels).
  2. Preheat the nozzle to 240–250 ºC and bed to 100 ºC.
  3. Turn off or reduce fan to 0–20%.
  4. Enable brim or skirt in slicer for better first-layer adhesion.
  5. Avoid air drafts; print in a stable temperature environment.
  6. Use adhesive like hairspray, buildtak, or PEI if needed.
  7. Let the print cool down slowly inside the closed chamber.

EXPERT TIPS

  • Warping? → Increase bed adhesion with brim and raise bed temp to 110 ºC.
  • Strong odor? → Print in a ventilated space or use HEPA/Carbon filters.
  • Shiny finish? → Use acetone vapor smoothing in a sealed box.
  • Poor bed adhesion? → Use adhesive spray or suitable surface.

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR ABS PART CRACKS?

  • Raise the bed temperature: 100–110 ºC to prevent cooling too fast.
  • Lower fan speed: Keep it under 20% or disable.
  • Enable brim/skirt: Helps with adhesion and layer stress.
  • Keep away from drafts: Avoid windows or A/C vents.

CAN I PRINT ABS WITH AN OPEN PRINTER?

  • Create a temporary enclosure: Use acrylic, cardboard, or polycarbonate panels.
  • Print inside a box: Large cardboard boxes help retain heat.
  • Control the room: Use a heater or print in a thermally stable room.

POST-PROCESSING

ABS can be sanded, primed, and painted easily. It can also be smoothed with acetone vapor for a glossy, injection-mold-like finish.

MAINTENANCE AND FILAMENT CHANGE

Do not remove filament cold. Always heat to 240 ºC, purge, then pull gently. Use cleaning filament regularly to prevent clogs.

HOW TO DO ACETONE VAPOR SMOOTHING

  1. Use a sealed metal or glass container with a lid.
  2. Line the inside with paper towels soaked in acetone (not dripping).
  3. Place the part on a ceramic or glass stand (not touching the acetone).
  4. Seal the container and wait 10–20 minutes.
  5. Ventilate the part for 1 hour before handling.

Caution: Work in a ventilated area, away from heat or flames. Use gloves and mask.

IS THERE AN ALTERNATIVE TO ACETONE?

  • Manual sanding: Start with coarse (200–400) and finish with fine grit (800–1000).
  • Priming and painting: Use plastic primers and acrylic spray paint.
  • Transparent UV resins: Improve aesthetics, but more common with PLA.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

  • Can I print ABS on an open printer? Possible, but better results with an enclosure.
  • Is ABS toxic? Not toxic, but emits fumes. Use ventilation.
  • Is this ABS food safe? Not certified. Avoid food contact unless specified.
  • What nozzle size? 0.4 mm or larger. Use 0.5 mm+ for faster prints.
  • Can I paint ABS? Yes. Sand, prime, and paint with acrylics or plastic-safe sprays.
